Summer cleaning for the statues of the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence: in fact, the team of restoration specialists from the Uffizi Galleries finished a few hours ago a cleaning operation on the masterpieces that populate the monument located near the museum, which is home to some splendid masterpieces from different eras, from the Roman age to the 19th century via the 16th century and Mannerism. The Loggia is considered a kind of “open-air” hall of the Uffizi Gallery.
The care and conservation operations of the sculptural heritage of this famous corner of Piazza della Signoria were aimed at removing dust and materials that risk eroding the surfaces of the statues over time. Not only that, even “the eye” can appreciate, because following the intervention the skin of the sculptures appears whiter and smoother. The work involved all the sculptures, from the Roman ones to the Renaissance ones by Cellini and Giambologna to the 19th-century one by Pio Fedi. This is an intervention planned annually by the museum: the purpose, as mentioned, is to remove materials that tend to settle on the surface of the statues, thus keeping their “skin” more legible and healthy.
