Today, August 23, the National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria is closed to the public for safety reasons following theflooding of the museum’sbasements caused by the violent storm that hit the city yesterday.
Director Carmelo Malacrino said, “With the archaeologists and restorers working at the museum, we are working in the storerooms to verify the conservation status of the collections. We faced an absolutely unpredictable situation yesterday. I personally followed all the operations, assisted by the staff who made themselves available with great sensitivity and spirit of service. I deeply thank all those who worked during this particularly complex moment, and in particular the Fire Department, which intervened with two different teams. I also thank the Police Forces and the Prefecture for their support and attention to the Museum’s critical issues.”
The part of the building most affected was the lower part, and fortunately, the exhibition levels and the Hall of the Bronzes were not affected.
