The flood that hit lower Piedmont between October 2 and 3 did not spare the so-called Roman bridge in Bagnasco (Cuneo), one of the symbols of the village: of Roman origin, it was renovated in the 16th century by the French (so much so that the central arch bears a sculpture depicting the Lily of France). In ancient times it was used both as a bridge and as an aqueduct: in fact, a canal flowed over the arches to carry water.
And the water these days has severely damaged the bridge that crosses the Tanaro River: in fact, a large part of the arches that surmount it has collapsed, to be precise eight out of the thirteen that compose it. The bridge had already been damaged during the very serious flood of 1994, which struck the provinces of Cuneo, Turin, Asti and Alessandria between November 5 and 6, causing the loss of 70 lives. But even then it had not suffered such heavy collapses as those that occurred this past weekend.
The mayor of Bagnasco, Beppe Carazzone, let it be known that a discussion on the future of the bridge will be held in the Superintendency shortly, and the municipality will ask that it be rebuilt. The mayor then turned his thoughts to the families affected by the flood and to the Fassa Bortolo company, which has a plant near the river that was also heavily flooded.
