Five finalist cities announced for Italian Capital of Contemporary Art 2026


The municipalities of Carrara, Gallarate, Gibellina, Pescara and Todi enter the final round for the title of Italian Capital of Contemporary Art 2026. The winning project will be announced after public hearings in Rome on October 25, 2024.

The Ministry of Culture has announced the five finalist municipalities for the title of Italian Capital of Contemporary Art 2026. After reviewing the 23 applications received, the jury selected the following projects: Carrara, with the project Carrara - For 2000 years contemporary; Gallarate (Varese), with the project La Cultura del Fare. Il Fare della Cultura; Gibellina (Trapani), with the projectPortami il futuro; Pescara, with the project Pescara città contemporanea - Una porta aperta ai sogni; Todi (Perugia), with the project Ponte contemporaneo.

The finalist projects will be presented at public hearings to be held in Rome on October 25, 2024. Each municipality will have 60 minutes to present its dossier to the jury: 30 minutes dedicated to the presentation and another 30 minutes to answer questions from the experts.

The jury that named the finalists and will decide the winning city is chaired by Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, and includes Sofia Gnoli, Walter Guadagnini, Renata Cristina Mazzantini, and Vincenzo Santoro as its members. After evaluating the proposals, the jury will indicate the winning city to the minister, who will announce the new Italian Capital of Contemporary Art. The selected city will receive a grant of one million euros to carry out the activities envisaged in its dossier.

The hearings will be a crucial moment to delve into the projects, which range from historical reflections to future visions, and to demonstrate each city’s potential to become a contemporary artistic and cultural hub of national and international significance.
