A fire that broke out at Sacra di San Michele, the Piedmontese abbey whose construction dates back to the 11th century, was extinguished overnight. The intervention of firefighters prevented the flames that developed on the roof of the monastery from spreading. From the first investigations, the hypothesis takes the field that a short circuit may have caused the fire to break out: the roof of the abbey was in fact undergoing restoration work.
The abbey is therefore safe. No damage was reported to cultural property or people (unharmed were the three Rosminian fathers who were present in the building last night and who raised the alarm), but heavy damage was done to the roofing. However, Piedmont Region President Sergio Chiamparino has assured that funds will be secured for repairs, resulting from residual availability of Development and Cohesion Funds for Piedmont. An inspection by Culture Councillor Antonella Parigi and technicians is scheduled to ascertain the extent of the damage.
