Stage number two of the journey to restore the historic city walls of Ferrara has begun. As of February 24, a new section of the city walls, about one kilometer in length, will undergo conservative restoration work. Thus continues the project One kilometer of walls per year, initiated by the city administration for the progressive recovery of the fortifications, totaling about nine kilometers.
The one launched is, therefore, the second tranche of interventions after the one that last year led to the rehabilitation of the first stretch of fortifications, from Viale Belvedere to Via Azzo Novello. For the second part of the intervention, the Administration has allocated about 500 thousand euros. The amount is in addition to the approximately 900 thousand euros previously committed, which also led to the resurfacing of the bike path in the section of the underpass between Piazzale San Giovanni and Piazzale Medaglie d’Oro and in the portion of Via Mura di Porta Po.
In detail, as in the first portion of the walls, the elimination of the weed vegetation that has proliferated over the years in the interstices of the bricks, the application of biocides compatible with the historic materials to prevent the growth of new pests, an overall cleaning will be carried out, the repair of the lesions using the scuci-cuci technique (which consists of restoring the wall face by means of the original bricks that have detached over the years and have been preserved for this type of work), and the consolidation and rebuilding of the joints.
Work will then begin in March on the bastions of St. Anthony and St. Peter, which will be affected by repairing cracks and lesions through the injection of hydraulic lime-based mortars to increase strength. In agreement with the Superintendence, piles will then be placed to prevent subsidence. Surface cracks will also be repaired. Finally, cleaning will be carried out by removing weeds.
“A unique heritage that since the beginning of the mandate we have wanted to put at the center of the project of decorum and historical restitution. Consistent with this commitment we continue, year by year, in implementing ’one kilometer of walls per year,’ investing significant resources for this goal,” explains Mayor Alan Fabbri.
