Director Stanley Donen passed away on Feb. 21 at the age of 94.
Born in Columbia, South Carolina, on April 13, 1924, Donen had begun his career as a dancer on Broadway and then directed, together with Gene Kelly, the comedy A Day in New York (1949). Also with Gene Kelly, he co-directed his most famous film, Singin’ in the Rain (1952), which features Kelly singing the song Singin’ in the Rain in the famous scene in which he decides to sing and dance by letting himself get wet in the rain despite being provided with an umbrella.

He then directed solo musicals Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954), Cinderella in Paris (1957), The Boxer and the Dancer (1978) and comedies such as Charades (1964) and Those Two (1969), to name a few. His last film was 1984’s That Day in Rio. In 1998 he received theAcademy Award for Lifetime Achievement, while in 2004 he received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Film Festival.
