Farewell to Robert Freeman. The celebrated photographer to the stars has died at the age of 82 in London. His most famous shots immortalized The Beatles: Freeman worked with theiconic British band from 1963 to 1966, having occasion to photograph the group’s members numerous times. He produced the best-known covers, beginning with With The Beatles, and others such as A Hard Day’s Night, Beatles for Sale, Help! and Rubber Soul.
Announcing Robert Freeman’s passing was the Beatles themselves on their official Twitter page, which read “Robert Freeman, longtime photographer for The Beatles, has died - he created some of the band’s most iconic images. His photos will continue to be treasured and inspire other photographers.”
In addition, album covers made by the photographer appeared on the band’s Facebook profile, celebrating through his shots their close collaboration.
The London-based photographer began as a photojournalist, but he had his own success as the Beatles’ first official photographer. His shots include those of Andy Warhol, Muhammad Ali, actor Charlton Heston, and reggae singer Jimmy Cliff.
In 1964 he produced one of the first Pirelli Calendars.
