Professor Remo Bodei, a philosopher and scholar of international stature who taught at the University of Pisa and the Scuola Normale Superiore, where he long taught history of philosophy and aesthetics, has died in Pisa. Born in Cagliari in 1938, Bodei graduated from the University of Pisa and completed his education in Tübingen, Freiburg, Heidelberg and Bochum: he was one of Italy’s leading experts on German philosophy and culture, particularly of the 19th century.
Indeed, Bodei was a great scholar ofGerman idealism and in particular of Hegel’s thought, about which he left numerous studies (one of the most famous is System and Epoch in Hegel, published at the age of thirty-seven in 1975). Remo Bodei’s interests also ranged over history (his studies on the works of Ernst Bloch are particularly remembered) and literature, particularly the connections between philosophy and literature during Romanticism (he studied the figure of Friedrich Hölderlin, of whose poetry Bodei was one of the greatest devotees). Of many exponents of German culture (from Hegel to Bloch, from Adorno to Rosenkranz), Bodei edited Italian translations.
In addition to the University of Pisa, Bodei has taught at UCLA in Los Angeles and has been a visiting professor at several universities around the world (especially in the United States). Prominent among his many awards is the Pisa National Literary Award, in the non-fiction section, which he won in 1992. Finally, Remo Bodei was for many years the scientific director of Carrara’s Con_vivere cultural festival, which he helped bring to national prominence.
