Painter, sculptor, writer and filmmaker Per Kirkeby has passed away at the age of 79 in his native Copenhagen.
Among the leading exponents of twentieth-century Danish art, Kirkeby represented in his canvases his great passion and knowledge of geology and natural history, depicting landscape nature in an abstract manner.
This passion even led him to make several expeditions to the Arctic.
In the 1960s he participated in the Fluxus movement.
He was a lecturer at the Karlsruhe Art Academy and the Städelschule in Frankfurt and participated in many Venice Biennials, starting in the 1970s.
In 2009 he was featured in the Per Kirkeby Retro spective at the Tate Modern in London.
