Farewell to Nanda Vigo: the great Milanese designer passes away at 83.

Designer Nanda Vigo passed away yesterday in Milan at the age of 83. Born Fernanda Vigo in Milan on November 14, 1936, she became passionate about art as a child and trained in Switzerland, where she graduated from the Institut Polytechnique in Lausanne, and began working in 1959, when she opened her studio in Milan. In the Lombard capital she frequented Lucio Fontana and the artists of the Azimut group (especially Piero Manzoni and Enrico Castellani) and began to travel around Europe. His first solo exhibition, at Galleria Santo Stefano in Venice, was in 1962: several others would follow, each year, one of them (at Galleria La Polena in Genoa in 1968) together with Lucio Fontana.

His long curriculum includes collaborations at the highest level (he worked, among others, with Giò Ponti), first-rate exhibition layouts, and participation in important international shows: in 1982 he also participated in the Venice Biennale, while since 2006 a permanent exhibition of his works has been on display at the Triennale Museum in Milan. Other works of his can be found at the Guggenheim in New York and the Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin. Last year, the first anthological exhibition dedicated to her, curated by Marco Meneguzzo, was held in Milan’s Palazzo Reale: titled Nanda Vigo. Light Project, it had featured an exhibition of some 80 works.

Nanda Vigo’s innovative design was based on research around light, on the mixture of design, art, architecture and environment, on transparency and immateriality. Among her most famous works are her Chronotopes, compositions of space and light that take the form of frames where glass plates are enclosed, whose transparency and immateriality is enhanced by neon lights.

Numerous awards have been won: these include the Industrial Design Award achieved in 1971 in New York, the Silver Medal for Design in Milan (1973), and the Compasso d’Oro (2001), among many others.
