Art critic Luke Beatrice, current president of the Quadriennale di Roma, died prematurely today in Turin at the age of 63. Suffering a heart attack in recent days, he was hospitalized in serious condition at the Molinette Hospital.
One of Italy’s most influential and highly regarded art critics, he was the protagonist of a career that spanned several decades and was able to build a distinguished professional career, becoming a point of reference in thecontemporary art scene. Born in Turin in 1961, Beatrice has dedicated his life to the interpretation of contemporary art, combining his academic knowledge with a popularizing approach capable of bringing even the less experienced closer to the world of creativity. Her approach has always been characterized by a balance between academic research and a passion for innovation, elements that have laid the foundation for a successful career. As a critic, he has contributed to newspapers such as Flash Art, “Libero,” “Corriere Torino” and “Il Giornale dell’arte.”
Luke Beatrice graduated in Film History from the Faculty of Letters at the University of Turin and then specialized at the School of Specialization in Art History at the University of Siena. During his undergraduate years, he developed a special interest in the historical avant-garde and twentieth-century art, which led him to explore the role of art in contemporary society. For years he taught art history: at the Academy of Fine Arts in Palermo, the Brera Academy in Milan, IAAD in Turin, Accademia Albertina in Turin, IED in Turin, and IULM in Milan. As a critic, he has written extensively in Flash Art magazine and curated numerous exhibitions of artists such as Daniele Galliano, Nicola Bolla, Marco Cingolani, and several others.
Writing has always been one of the main tools through which Luke Beatrice has expressed his vision of art. Author of numerous essays, catalogs and articles for specialized magazines, as well as books for the general public, the Turin-based critic has always been known for his caustic style, capable of combining analytical rigor and accessibility.
As a curator, his achievements include participation in the Venice Biennale in 2009 together with Beatrice Buscaroli, where he curated the exhibition Collaudi for the Italian Pavilion, and exhibitions dedicated to artists such as Andy Warhol, Edward Hopper, Jackson Pollock and numerous others. From 2010 to 2018 he was also president of the Circolo dei Lettori in Turin.
Recent exhibitions include the anthological exhibition of Andy Warhol at Palazzo Ducale, Genoa (2016) and of Edward Hopper at Palazzo Fava, Bologna, and Vittoriano, Rome (2015-2016); the group exhibitions Jackson Pollock and the New York School, Palazzo Reale, Milan and Vittoriano, Rome 2018; Easy Rider; The Myth of the Motorcycle as Art, Reggia di Venaria 2018; Warhol and friends, Palazzo Albergati, Bologna 2018; Diabolik at the Mole, Museum of Cinema, Turin 2021; Carlo Levi, GAM Turin 2022; Giacomo Soffiantino, Ferrero Foundation, Alba 2022; Alberto Moravia and art criticism, GAM, Turin March 2023; Marco Tamburro, MAXXI, Rome 2023. For Gallerie d’Italia. Intesa Sanpaolo he curated at Palazzo Zevallos in Naples exhibitions devoted to New York, London, Berlin and Los Angeles, and the Futuro exhibition at Palazzo Leoni Montanari in Vicenza (2020). He has published numerous essays on art and music criticism. He also served as art curator for the Heysel victims’ memorial, an assignment given to him by Juventus FC.
His brother Giulio, writing on Facebook, remembers him this way, “Two brothers are not two friends. They are branches of the same tree that may diverge with the years ... but their bond will be eternal. Bye Luca have a good trip.”
