Lindsay Kemp, the great English choreographer, mime, dancer and actor, died last night in Livorno, Italy, at the age of 80.
Born in Cheshire in 1938, Kemp was a multifaceted artist who combined the art of dance with that of mime, often introducing extraordinary disguises into his shows: famous is his reinterpretation of Pierrot.
His great shows include Nijinsky, Mr Punch and Onnagata.
Not to forget the famous Flowers, a play from the 1970s in which he skillfully linked music and dance. “I produced it with 500 pounds received as an inheritance from an aunt, and from there for 25 years I toured all over the world, always attacked for obscenity,” he recounted in Milan during his acceptance speech at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, which had awarded him an honorary degree.
He was inspired by David Bowie, with whom he collaborated on Ziggy Stardust, Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel.
