Jack Vettriano is leaving us: the Scottish painter, now the protagonist of an ongoing exhibition at Palazzo Pallavicini in Bologna curated by Francesca Bogliolo, organized and realized by Chiara Campagnoli, Deborah Petroni and Rubens Fogacci of Pallavicini s.r.l., in collaboration with the artist himself, was found lifeless in his apartment in Nice on Saturday, March 1. He was 73 years old, and around his death there are no suspicious circumstances: according to his agent, his death was due to natural causes.
Born in 1951 in Fife, Scotland, Jack Vettriano began painting in the 1970s as a self-taught hobby after a girl gave him a set of watercolors for his birthday. His career took a turn in 1988, when he presented two works at the Royal Scottish Academy’s Annual Exhibition: both were purchased on the first day, attracting the attention of several galleries. In 1992 he had his first solo exhibition at the Edinburgh Gallery, entitled Tales of Love and Other Stories, and later at the Mall Galleries in London. From 1994 to 2007 he was represented by Portland Gallery, a period during which he had numerous solo exhibitions.
The year 2004 marked a key moment in his career: his famous painting The Singing Butler was sold at auction by Sotheby’s for nearly £750,000; he was also awarded the Order of the British Empire for his contribution to the visual arts and was featured in a Southbank Show documentary entitled Jack Vettriano: The People’s Painter.
His works, characterized by an aesthetic reminiscent of the noir genre, often deal with themes of love and sensuality, with figures in the foreground and evocative scenic settings.
