Musician and composer Ennio Morricone died tonight in Rome at the age of 91 from the consequences of a fall that caused him to break his femur. The news was announced by the family through Giorgio Assumma, Morricone’s attorney and friend.
Born in Rome on November 10, 1928, Morricone had studied at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory and began his career as a trumpet player in a number of Roman orchestras, but as early as 1955 he began writing music for films. After a few years of success in pop music (he edited the arrangements of some very popular songs such as Abbronzatissima and Hully gully in 10 by Edoardo Vianello, Sapore di sale by Gino Paoli, and Se telefonando by Mina), he began collaborating with director Sergio Leone, his classmate in elementary school. For Leone, Morricone signed the soundtrack to A Fistful of Dollars (with which he also won his first Nastro d’Argento, in 1965), which was followed by all of the director’s other spaghetti-westerns: For a Few Dollars More, The Good, the Bad, the Ugly, Once Upon a Time in the West (winner of the BAFTA award in 1984), Giù la testa.
Collaborations included those with Pier Paolo Pasolini( 1966’sUccellacci e uccellini ), Brian De Palma( 1989’sGli intoccabili ), and Quentin Tarantino( 2015’sThe hateful eight ). Morricone went on to sell 70 million records and was currently at the top of Siae’s earnings chart for songs played. He has also been active as a conductor (among others, he conducted the Teatro alla Scala Philharmonic Orchestra on a 2006 tour).
In his career, Morricone has received six Oscar nominations, winning one (best score for Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight: failing instead to win Days of Heaven, Mission, The Untouchables, Bugsy and Malena). Morricone went on to win three Golden Globes (for Mission, The Legend of the Pianist on the Ocean, and The hateful eight), six BAFTAs, nine David di Donatellos, and ten Silver Ribbons. For Morricone also an honorary Oscar in 2007 and a David del Cinquantenario in 2006. In 1995 he won the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 52nd Venice Film Festival.
Farewell to Ennio Morricone, the Oscar-winning composer and musician. |
