Distinguished archaeologist Antonio Giuliano has died in Rome at the age of 88. Born in Rome in 1930, Giuliano had been a student of Ranuccio Bianchi Bandinelli, was a university lecturer at the universities of Genoa and Rome Tor Vergata (where he taught archaeology and history of Greek and Roman art), and also contributed to the establishment of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage. He was also editor, for the Italian Encyclopedia Institute, of theEncyclopedia of Ancient Art and theArchaeological Encyclopedia. He was also a national member of the Accademia dei Lincei since 2001.

His works include some important texts on ancient and medieval art such as Greek Art (1986-87), History of Greek Art (1989, 19982) and Norman and Frederician Studies (with others, 2003). Giuliano’s interests also focused on the figure of Giacomo Leopardi, to whom he devoted the essays Giacomo Leopardi and the Restoration (1994) and Giacomo Leopardi and the Restoration: new documents (1998). To the Library of the Accademia dei Lincei, Giuliano donated his substantial scientific library of more than 4,000 volumes and his photographic archive, with more than 20,000 images of works and artifacts, as well as shots documenting his decades of archaeological activity.



“The passing of Professor Antonio Giuliano,” Cultural Heritage Minister Alberto Bonisoli wrote on Twitter, “is a serious loss for the world of art history and archaeology. He was a great lover of the subject, a scholar of literature and history. I want to offer heartfelt condolences to his family members.”
