Nearly 500 works attributed to Edoarda Emilia Maino, a painter who had contributed to the Milanese avant-garde art movements of the 1950s under the pseudonym Dadamaino, turned out to be forgeries. The investigation started in October 2014, when an art expert had noticed the presence on the market of a disproportionate number of Dadamaino Volumes, black or white monochromatic canvases perforated by elliptical holes, made by Dadamaino between 1958 and 1960.
Following the complaint, the Nucleo Carabinieri Tutela Patrimonio Culturale in Monza reportedly seized 90 works during as many as 31 searches in the provinces of Asti, Bergamo, Bergamo, Brescia, Florence, La Spezia, Lodi, Mantua, Matera, Milan, Modena, Monza and Brianza, Pisa, Rome, and Varese.
Further investigations revealed that many other forgeries attributed to Dadamaino were purchased and exhibited in Paris, London, and New York, all sold for between 20,000 and 60,000 euros, for a total turnover exceeding 20 million euros. There are 462 fake works filed and then placed on the market by the owners of an art gallery in the province of Milan, while the number of suspects is 12 people, three of whom are even members of the artist’s archive, including the then art director, an art critic at international level, who provided the decisive certification of authenticity of the fake works.
Unfortunately, the author of the forgeries has not yet been identified, but the investigation continues.
