Excavations begin at Paestum curated by the University of Naples L'Orientale

Excavation work has begun at the Sacello-Heroon of Poseidonia overseen by the University of Naples L'Orientale.

Archaeological excavations curated by theUniversity of Naples “L’Orientale” at the Sacello-Heroon of Podeidonia, a late archaic monument in the agora dedicated to the city’s founder, have begun in Paestum.

The space outside the Roman-era enclosure will be the subject of excavations, directed by Fabrizio Pesando with the coordination of Laura Ficuciello, in order to investigate the monument’s original state and various architectural phases.

In 1998 Laura Ficuciello supervised the study of the documentation found during the excavations conducted in 1954 by Sestieri, which remained unpublished, but there are still unresolved problems, such as the original layout of the monument at the time of its construction (510 BC).

Professor Ficuciello said, “Very important results are expected from the resumption of investigations in this area of habitation by the University of Naples ”L’Orientale.“ the survey to the east of the enclosure of the ”sacellum" ultimately aims to investigate the space located between the monument explored in 1954 and the essays carried out in the past immediately further east, in order to reconstruct the history of this sector of the agora, the public space par excellence of the Greek polis.
The excavation sees the participation of students from the University of Naples “L’Orientale,” enrolled in degree courses (three-year and master’s) in archaeological disciplines, who will thus have the splendid opportunity to be able to field test the knowledge they have learned in the course of their studies."
