They go on a ghost hunt and vandalize a castle: it happens in England, atCodnor Castle in Derbyshire. In ruins since the 13th century, the medieval castle is officially listed as a historic monument and considered heritage at risk.
Since the beginning of British confinement following the pandemic, however, the site has been the destination of many intrusions by “explorers” who do damage and vandalism during their search for strange spirits known to haunt what remains of the ancient castle.
Volunteers from the Codnor Castle Heritage Trust complain that since the first confinement began, the site has been subjected to numerous acts of vandalism; even an arson fire damaged an abandoned farmhouse near the ruins. Fences and signs have been of no use.
“It all started with the first confinement, when the parks were closed,” Rokia Brown, president of the foundation responsible for the castle, told the BBC. “The phenomenon increased further after the schools were closed, with intrusions by urban explorers and paranormal investigators. People who don’t understand where it’s not possible to go and just want to cause trouble.”
Even before it was a destination for these people, Codnor Castle was in poor condition. Volunteers have also discovered that fragments of the castle’s remains are being offered for sale on the web. “We are very concerned about the threat to this important site, which is the county’s heritage: not only the castle remains, but also the historic farm. We must not let this historic place sink further into decay.”
