Emanuela Daffra, director of the Lombardy Regional Museums Directorate, has been confirmed for an additional year as interim superintendent at theOpificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence, among the oldest and certainly most prestigious centers of expertise in the restoration and conservation of works of art.

Founded in 1588 by Ferdinando I de’ Medici as a court manufactory specializing in the production of furnishings and artistic objects in semi-precious stones, the Opificio with the decline of grand ducal patronage and the Unification ofItaly at the end of the nineteenth century, it gradually directed its action to the restoration of mosaics and stone materials, broadening its expertise to the restoration of numerous types of works of art following the merger into a single entity with the Restoration Cabinet of the Superintendence.

Its eleven restoration sectors currently have “in care” of 1237 pieces, in a wide variety of materials: tapestries and carpets, bronzes and ancient weapons, wall paintings, paper and membranous materials, stone materials, mosaics and clerks, goldsmithing, polychrome wooden sculptures, plastic and glassy ceramic materials, textiles and leather. The sectors are complemented by two specific cross-departmental services for consulting on the restoration of archaeological heritage and contemporary works of art, as well as a scientific laboratory for non-invasive, micro-invasive diagnostics and for the study and testing of innovative materials and methodologies for restoration, and a laboratory for climatology and preventive conservation.
