Eike Schmidt to women: your battle in many parts of the world is not yet won. Don't give up, you are needed

On Women's Day, Uffizi Director Eike D. Schmidt makes an appeal to women: 'your battle is not yet completely won, don't give up'.

From March 7 to May 26, 2019, the Gallery of Modern Art in the Pitti Palace is hosting the exhibition Lessico femminile (Women’s Lexicon), which showcases artworks and photographs and all kinds of objects that tell the story of women through labor from 1861, the year some women workers joined the artisan fraternity, to 1926, the year Grazia Deledda won the Nobel Prize for literature.

Ahead of March 8, World Women’s Day, the director of the Uffizi Galleries (of which Palazzo Pitti is part of the complex), Eike Schmidt, made an appeal to the #MeToo movement during the presentation of the exhibition: “the battle started by your great-grandmothers and grandmothers for a fairer world towards women,” Schmidt said, “is still far from being won in all parts of the world. So don’t give up, there is still a need for your commitment, for the great energy you employ internationally.”

“There are still too few women in management positions in companies and in key positions,” the director added. “There is a feminicide rate that is still very high, and this is intolerable. So there is really a lot to be done. But in the meantime, there is positive news, because in the world there is more and more attention and interest in female artists and female creative talent that globally is increasingly succeeding in overcoming age-old prejudices that were once impossible to break down. The road to the true springtime of women is long but all together we can make it.”

It should be noted, in conclusion, that also at the Pitti Palace the exhibition What I saw on the road, dedicated to the painter Kiki Smith( newshere ), is underway as a further celebration of women by the Uffizi Galleries.
