The Washington Post reported a news story that is hilarious.
Last September, U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania reportedly asked the Guggenheim in New York to lend them a Van Gogh painting, more specifically the 1888 "Landscape with Snow," for display in the Oval Office of the White House.
Chief curator Nancy Spector responded, via e-mail, that she could not grant their request, as that painting was already destined for Bilbao, and offered them another work: it is America, an 18-carat gold cabinet made especially for the museum by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan as a satire on the excess of wealth in the United States.
In the email, Spector is reported to have said that the artist would be more than happy to hand over his work, which is so valuable and fragile that the museum would take the time to provide instructions for its installation, on long-term loan.
Still no response from the White House.
This is not the first time a U.S. president has asked to borrow a work of art for display at the White House: Trump’s predecessor, Barack Obama, obtained works by Rothko and Jasper Johns, while the Kennedys had a painting by Delacroix on loan.
Evidently Cattelan’s gold toilet was offered to Trump because of his passion for all things lavish and his scrupulous attention to hygiene.
