Discovered in Reggio Emilia a section of the ancient via Emilia

During excavation work in Reggio Emilia, a three-meter section of the ancient Via Emilia was unearthed.

In Reggio Emilia, a section of the ancient Via Emilia has emerged during excavations in Piazza Gioberti. It is a segment of about three meters corresponding to a portion of the southern limit of the original street.

A note from the Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio for the metropolitan city of Bologna and the provinces of Modena, Reggio Emilia and Ferrara states that it is a plane made of squared river cobblestones, arranged in such a way as to allow rainwater to run off laterally. He adds, “The street is bordered by a crepidine (sidewalk) made of cobblestones placed in shear that create a kind of continuous step raised above the remaining part of the roadbed; part of this crepidine had already been removed in ancient times. Remaining probably on the surface until the end of the Roman Empire, however, the road seems to have declined over time as a carriageway to be partly occupied by structures and partly flanked by artisanal activities such as metallurgical work. After that period the road was buried by subsequent river sediments.”

The segment found is thus part of the consular road ordered by Marcus Aemilius Lepidus in 187 B.C., which touched the nerve centers of Regio VIII, coinciding with present-day Emilia-Romagna. The discovery will be the subject of study and publications.
