Sky Arte is celebrating the fifth anniversary of the White Duke’s passing with a dedicated evening featuring two exclusive documentaries: tonight, from 9:15 p.m., the documentary David Bowie - Birth of a Starwill be broadcast, which aims to trace David Bowie’s career from the mid-1960s until the death of Ziggy Stardust, his alterego, in 1973, through archival footage, audio recordings and interviews. Friends and colleagues of the celebrated artist, among the most influential of the 20th century, will also recall lesser-known moments of his life.
This will be followed at 11 p.m. by David Bowie - The Last Five Years, Francis Whately’s documentary focusing on the last years of Bowie’s life: previously unreleased material and interviews will delve into the making of Blackstar and The Next Day, the last two records, and the musical Lazarus.
In remembrance of the artist, five years after his death, cartoonists Marco Bucci and Riccardo Atzeni have also created a graphic novel, Lightning Red, due out today from Panini Comics. A work that engaged the cartoonists for four years, because it was entirely painted in watercolor. The protagonist of the graphic novel is a boy, Samuel, who, as soon as he finds out the news of Bowie’s death that January 10, stands motionless in the center of Bologna and everything stops making sense. He crosses time and space and finds himself in a society of the distant future.
