Daughter of a great collector donates a painting by Silvestro Lega to the Uffizi

Josie, daughter of the great Genoese collector Mario Taragoni, donated Silvestro Lega's Portrait of a Lady in a Garden to the Uffizi Galleries.

A painting by Silvestro Lega has been donated to the Uffizi Galleries by Josie, daughter of Mario Taragoni, a collector from Genoa.

It is the Ritratto di signora in giardino (Portrait of a Lady in a Garden ) made by theMacchiaioli artist in 1883: it depicts a lady in the foreground with cropped dark hair, fairly pronounced facial features and a light blue dress with lace trim adorned with little flowers and a brooch on the collar. In the background are large leaves of plants from a garden.

The work was made during a moment of serenity for the artist when he lived with the Tommasi family in Bellariva (Florence). It was displayed in Room 18 of the Modern Art Gallery of Palazzo Pitti between Giovanni Fattori’s Ritratto della Figliastra and Lo Staffato.

Uffizi Galleries Director Eike Schmidt said, "Another masterpiece of Macchiaioli painting is added to our collections. In line with her father’s thinking, Josie Taragoni wanted to dedicate this work to the Florentine museum, which has the most relevant collection of that artistic current: to her goes the grateful thoughts of the Galleries, the Florentines and all future visitors, who will thus be able to understand even better every aspect of Silvestro Lega’s creativity."
