Dario Disegni has been confirmed for another four years, by MiBACT Minister Dario Franceschini, as president of the MEIS - National Museum of Italian Judaism and the Shoah in Ferrara. The decree was signed in compliance with the law and the MEIS statute, which assigns the appointment of the president to the Minister of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism in agreement with the Union of Italian Jewish Communities.
“In just a few years the MEIS has become a leading museum on the international scene and a prestigious cultural institution capable of bringing memory to life and telling the story of Italian Jews to the entire world. Valuable work has been done at the MEIS. Knowledge is the best antidote to hatred,” the minister said.
“I am deeply grateful to Minister Franceschini for the trust he has placed in me by calling me to the presidency of the MEIS for a second four-year term. This appointment is for me a great honor and at the same time a great responsibility, to which I will try to cope with maximum commitment,” Disegni replied.
The president added that the past four-year term has been a period marked by extraordinary progress in the process of realization of the National Museum of Italian Judaism and the Shoah, which has seen the completion of the restoration of the former Ferrara Prison and its enhancement as an exhibition venue, where exhibitions of great relevance and appreciation by both the public and critics have been held.
For the next four years the building project is expected to be completed with the construction of five new buildings for exhibition spaces, auitorium, library, bookshop, educational laboratories and restaurant-cafeteria; as well as the continuation of major exhibitions, the complete realization of the permanent exhibition itinerary, and intense cultural, research, dialogue and discussion activities.
“In such a disturbing period, in which we are astonished to witness an exponential growth of phenomena of hatred, intolerance towards those who are different, racism, anti-Semitism, the MEIS aims to play a bulwark role against these drifts through an intense educational and cultural action, aimed especially at the younger generations, for the full implementation of the rights of equality and freedom enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic,” concluded Disegni.
