A canvas by Panfilo Nuvolone (Cremona, 1581 - Milan, 1651) stolen from the parish church of Cavatigozzi, a rural hamlet in the municipality of Cremona, in March 1988 has been found. The work depicts a St. Mary Magdalene, the titular saint of the small house of worship, and was recovered thanks to the work of the Carabinieri’s Nucleo Tutela Patrimonio Culturale (Cultural Heritage Protection Unit), which handed the work back to the Cremona diocese on August 29.
Carabinieri tracked down the work on the antiques market and located it thanks in part to the complaint that Cavatigozzi’s parish priest, Stefano Moruzzi, had filed at the time of the theft. The work, which is in good condition and will be subjected to a photographic campaign, will be returned in the coming days to the Cavatigozzi parish church, which will see it return after a full 31 years of absence.
“This important find, which occurred thanks to the constant work and of the Carabinieri Operational Unit,” said Don Gianluca Gaiardi, responsible for the cultural heritage of the diocese of Cremona, “reminds us of the importance of precise cataloging by parishes of the heritage of the works of art of which they are custodians.” It is in fact also thanks to the accurate cataloging of the work that the Carabinieri were able to find it.
