Master architect Vittorio Gregotti passed away in Milan this morning at the age of 92. The world-renowned architect had been hospitalized in the Lombard capital and passed away following complications from Coronavirus.
A native of Novara, born in 1927, his most famous projects include the Teatro degli Arcimboldi in Milan, the Belém Cultural Center in Lisbon, stadiums in Barcelona and Genoa, the Zen district in Palermo, theCestoni Aquarium in Livorno, the opera house in Aix-en-Provence, and the expansion of the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art at theAccademia Carrara in Bergamo.
His professional activity was accompanied by a great commitment to teaching in Milan, Palermo and Venice.
His writings include Territory of Architecture (1966), Industrial Product Design (1982), The Visible City (1993), Van Gogh’s Shoes. Modifications of Architecture (1994), Tales of Architecture (1998), Identity and Crisis of European Architecture (1999), Fragments of Construction (2000), In the Footsteps of Palladio (2000), Seventeen Letters on Architecture (2000), Against the End of Architecture (2008), Architecture and the Postmetropolis (2011), The Architecture of Céfangs (2012), Uncertainties and Simulations (2012), The Possible Necessary (2014), and When Modern Was Not a Style (2018).
In 1975 Gregotti curated the Venice Biennale, and in 2012 he was awarded the Gold Medal for Lifetime Achie vement from the Milan Triennale.
