Coronavirus emergency: Milan's Mudec helps Varese hospital with... a robot!

Straight from the Museum of Cultures in Milan (Mudec), comes an unexpected help for the doctors of theCircolo e Fondazione Macchi Hospital of ASST Sette Laghi in Varese: Sanbot Elf!

Sanbot Elf is one of the 6 robots that were to be the stars of the exhibition Robot. The Human Project, now suspended due to theCoronavirus emergency. And it is precisely for the Covid-19 outbreak that Mudec has made available this little robot just over the height of a 7-year-old boy and equipped with cute digital, blinking eyes.

Sanbot is equipped with three cameras, an HD touch screen, a projector and many sensors and uses facial recognition software. The robot will allow doctors and nurses to monitor patients through its camera connected to a monitor, allowing hospital staff to interact without the risks of infection and reducing the consumption of protective equipment. Doctors and nurses can also talk through the robot’s voice to the patient, who, if not on assisted ventilation, can respond through voice messages. The robot will work together with five other robots to watch over 12 patients, one for each bed pair.

“Obviously, these robots don’t eliminate human contact with the patient, but they do reduce access,” explains Professor Francesco Dentali, director of the Department of High Intensity Medicine at Circolo Hospital in Varese, which is caring for more than 83 inpatients. “On the contrary, by saving us the time of dressing and undressing, which has a significant impact on our activity, the quality of the time we dedicate to them will also improve.”

“This is a very important thing, of course, but it is also interesting that this is not a particularly powerful robot or one that is prepared for extreme situations,” adds exhibition co-curator Antonio Mazzoni, scientific head of the Laboratory of Computational Neuroengineering atthe Institute of Biorobotics at the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in Pisa. “This is a robot that is made for interaction with people. At the exhibition we tried to focus not so much on the evolution of humanoid robots as objects, but on the development of collaboration between humans and robots, and this is a perfect example of that.”
