The famous bronze statue of the Little Mermaid, a symbol of Copenhagen and probably Denmark ’s best-known monument abroad, was daubed on the night of May 29-30 with red paint. Authorities are now investigating who may have been the perpetrator, but the motives would appear clear: in front of the statue the vandals wrote, with the same red paint, the phrase “Denmark defends the whales of the Faroe Islands.” This would therefore be an attack by ecologists: the Faroe Islands have a long tradition of whaling.
This is not the first time the Little Mermaid has become the target of vandalism attacks. Her head, for example, was stolen in 1964 and 1998, while in 1984 her right arm was amputated. And already other times it has been covered with paint. Meanwhile, cleanup operations have already begun.
