Until September 2018, the fortress of Carcassonne presents itself to visitors wrapped in yellow concentric circles: this is a project by contemporary artist Felice Varini (Locarno, 1952) entitled"Concentriques excentriques."
Varini often uses architecture as a support for his works, and on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of theinclusion of the city of Carcassonne in the UNESCO World Heritage List, the artist has designed fifteen yellow circles that develop from a circle placed at the entrance to the Porte d’Aude, the gate located on the west front of the city’s fortifications.
The work changes the perception of the fortress and was designed specifically for this place.
“I wanted to work with curves to create a contrast with this military architecture. The Porte d’Aude gives the size and diameter of the first circle; from the latter other circles propagate over the entire building. All the circles become arches, because they are interrupted by the ground and vegetation,” explained the artist himself.
The installation, however, has received a lot of criticism from residents, who have petitioned to remove it, but Varini responded that it has often elicited this kind of reaction since there is underlying misunderstanding.
