Comics, the first fund of the French Academy in Rome with 200 authors is born

The Academy of France in Rome will launch its first comic book fund bringing together nearly two hundred international authors.

TheAcademy of France in Rome-Villa Medici has acquired 276 French-language comics that will lead to the creation of a fund dedicated specifically to comics with nearly two hundred international authors.

For this operation, it relied on the advice of the Cité internationale de la bande dessinée et de l’image d’Angoulême (CIBDI) to select the titles, and the Librairie française de Rome Stendhal to supply the works.

The selection chosen to bring this new fund to life is intended to bring authors and authors, illustrators and illustrators from different backgrounds and disciplines to the forefront, making possible a dialogue between the big names in comics and more niche artists. These include former Villa Medici fellows François Olislaeger (comics author and illustrator, 2019-2020), Lancelot Hamelin (writer, 2016-2017), Anne-Margot Ramstein (illustrator, 2015-2016), and Mathias Énard (writer, 2005-2006), as well as former residents Catherine Meurisse (comic book author and illustrator, 2015), Isabelle Boinot (artist and illustrator, 2020), Matthias Lehmann (comic book author, 2020), Régis Lejonc (illustrator, 2019), and Carole Chaix (illustrator and cartoonist, 2018).

The new collection will complement the collections of the Academy’s library, which already has more than thirty-seven thousand volumes, including some comics; it will progressively add projects by fellows, residents, guest artists, and researchers staying at the Villa, works from the French network in Rome (École française de Rome, Institut français Italia), and from the library’s external readership.

On this occasion, the Academy of France in Rome intends to reaffirm its support for authors, authors and all those involved in the book industry and to contribute to the dissemination of the ninth art in all its narrative and graphic expressions. It thus continues its commitment to contemporary creation, in a process of convergence and openness to every artistic form, without making exceptions for the language of bande dessinée.
