Comic Book Museum excluded from MiBACT refreshments. Franceschini: Error of the offices

Initially excluded from MiBACT grants, Milan's Museo del Fumetto. Franceschini apologizes and reiterates that comics are art.

"Comics are art and MiBACT has always worked to enhance them over the years," said Minister Dario Franceschini, after personally apologizing to Luigi Bona, director of WOW Museo del Fumetto in Milan. “I called Luigi Bona this morning to apologize for the exclusion of the Museo del Fumetto from Covid emergency grants. An interpretation error by the offices that we will correct immediately,” Franceschini wrote in a tweet in response to Fumettologica. The magazine dedicated to comics information and culture had disclosed that the MiBACT had rejected the museum’s request for financial support to cope with losses due to the closure because it was "an exhibition place for things lacking the quality of cultural heritage."

Upon being told of the rejection, director Luigi Bona reacted by saying, “With ten years of activity and hundreds of exhibitions that have been a success with the public and critics, an international twinning with the Museum of Comics in Brussels, and an archive with more than 800,000 pieces also lent to important Italian museums, we expected WOW Spazio Fumetto to be entitled to be helped with a contribution. Not only that, but also not to be apostrophized as ’an exhibition place of things lacking the quality of cultural heritage,’ being dismissed with a few lines written in bureaucratic language. This is not the way to help culture. We will try to continue with the little help we have and with the resources that come from teaching courses and the ticket office (as soon as they will allow us to reactivate them), keeping up our commitment to pay rent to the City of Milan and all the very high expenses of ordinary management, including the very high energy bills that drain our meager budgets every month even when the museum is closed. Unfortunately, from this perspective, the future outlook is as uncertain as ever and increasingly headed toward an inevitable closure.”

Minister Franceschini announced in a note that he has signed a decree allocating an additional 17 million euros for the refurbishment of non-state museums, including hitherto excluded realities, including the Museo del Fumetto in Milan.
