Who wants to see the deposits of the Colosseum? The Colosseum Archaeological Park presents the new guided tour program Deposits on Display, which every Friday until July will allow the public to discover the precious heritage kept in the deposits on the Via Nova, exceptionally open for the occasion, with finds that had not been on display for more than 30 years.
The initiative, coordinated by archaeologist Roberta Alteri, will allow visitors to the PArCo for the first time to access the rooms of the tabernae belonging to the Domus Tiberiana complex, which, for the occasion, have undergone a major redevelopment and arrangement. The exhibition project, based on a thematic and chronological criterion, intends to reconstruct the different contexts of the precious artifacts belonging to the historical collection of the Antiquarium, referable to different and fundamental contexts of the area and stored on the occasion of the realization of the New Museum of the Roman Forum in 2021, although without re-entering to be part of the exhibition.
Just to provide visitors with a picture of the historical and cultural context of the complex, guided tours, curated by PArCo’s in-house staff, will continue at the Museum of the Roman Forum, located on the ground floor of the Cloister of Santa Maria Nova, with an exhibition itinerary that especially enhances the contexts excavated by archaeologist and architect Giacomo Boni.
“We strongly wanted to launch this program in the conviction that the priceless wealth of cultural heritage in the Colosseum Archaeological Park should be shared as much as possible,” said Alfonsina Russo, director of the Colosseum Archaeological Park. “We did not want to leave valuable artifacts invisible, which is why we designed a new exhibit and opened previously inaccessible places to the public. Our mission is to protect and enhance this immense heritage and we do this relentlessly, aware of the high historical, cultural and identity value that belongs to everyone and of which we are temporary custodians for the benefit of the next generations.”
Three rounds (3:30 p.m.; 4:30 p.m.; 5:30 p.m.) are available for each Friday, subject to availability (8 seats per round), lasting about an hour and a half. Access is free upon purchase of one of the entrance tickets to the Colosseum Archaeological Park and for Membership Card holders.
