Christo's new floating work will be in Hyde Park

Starting June 20, 2018, Hyde Park in London will be the scene of a new work by Christo: a mastaba will be seen floating in the Serpentine Lake.

Taking inspiration from mastabas, or the monumental tombs of the ancient Egyptians made into mounds to protect the bodies of the deceased from foraging animals, Bulgarian-born U.S. artist Christo will join more than seven thousand barrels of oil on a platform of plastic cubes. The work will have the colors of the British flag: white, red and blue, and will be unveiled to coincide with the opening of an exhibition dedicated to Christo and his wife’s installations at the nearby Serpentine Galleries.

The project was conceived in October 2016.
