Chiari, in the province of Brescia, one of the municipalities hardest hit by the Covid-19 outbreak, has been named Italian Book Capital 2020.

The decision was made overnight by the Council of Ministers, which approved the MiBACT proposal. “Just as happened for the title of Italian Capital of Culture,” said Minister Dario Franceschini, “the Italian Capital of the Book will also generate virtuous mechanisms capable of developing cultural, engaging and innovative projects. Conferring the title on Chiari,” he added, "is also the right recognition of micro-publishing and the production of independent publishers, who for 18 years have found in this city an important review of exchange and promotion that will be organized again this year, from November 13 to 15, in an edition that respects health protocols. “This recognition,” the minister concluded, "comes in a special year and in an area heavily affected by the pandemic where, now more than ever, it is right to strengthen support for the book sector. In the hardest months of the lockdown, Chiari found precisely in reading, accomplished through the administration’s social channels, one of the tools to support the community. Now this experience can become a model."

Under the law, Law No. 15 of Feb. 13, 2020, Provisions for the promotion and support of reading, Chiari - Italian Book Capital 2020 will receive funding of 500,000 euros for the implementation of projects, initiatives and activities for the promotion of reading.

This year, in this first edition, the title of Book Capital was conferred by law by the Council of Ministers at the proposal of MiBACT; from next year it will be awarded following a special selection in which a committee of experts will evaluate the projects submitted.
