Casket with amulets and precious stones discovered in Pompeii. It may belong to a sorceress

During excavations in Pompeii's Regio V, part of a chest with amulets, objects and precious stones was found. It may have belonged to a sorceress.

In the Regio V area of the Pompeii Archaeological Park, where archaeological excavations are still underway, a great treasure in the true sense of the word has been found: in the House with the Garden, part of a chest built of wood and metal was discovered, inside which female objects and a rich variety of amulets and precious stones were found.

Objects and amulets against bad luck, such as bells, ears of corn, small skulls, scarabs, bone buttons, but also ambers, crystals and amethysts, possibly belonging to the lady of the house. But it is also likely that that casket belonged to a person connected to the world of magic, a sort of sorceress: the hypothesis was put forward because the casket was in a service room, away from the bedroom and the atrium; moreover, the unusual absence of golds was noted, a fact not to be underestimated since all women in Pompeii liked to wear jewelry.

All these objects then turn out to be linked to symbols ofthe Roman world that refer to fertility, marriage, childbirth, and seduction.
The park’s director himself, Massimo Osanna, added that they might be “jewelry to be worn for ritual occasions, rather than to show off elegance.”

Meanwhile, all the objects, amulets and lucky charms have been cleaned and restored, and now they will be studied.
