The Pinacoteca di Brera is 210 years old today, and to celebrate its birthday it is offering all its visitorsfree admission until 10:15 pm.
In fact, on August 15, 1809, the famous picture gallery was officially established, although an initial collection of works had already existed since 1776. The Brera collection was to include exemplary works that had educational purposes.
The collection became a museum at the behest of Napoleon Bonaparte when Milan became the capital of the Italic Kingdom: he intended to bring together the most relevant paintings from all the territories conquered by the French armies.
August 15 was also the birthday of Napoleon himself, who was in fact born in Ajaccio on August 15, 1769.
