Today, July 28, is the last day for the evaluation of candidacies to enter the Unesco World Heritage list, and the surprises in fact for Italy are not yet over: after the recognition obtained by the frescoes of Padua Urbs Picta and Montecatini Terme, as of today the Portici of Bologna are also a World Heritage Site. This brings to 58 the number of Italian sites inscribed on the World Heritage List.
This was announced by Undersecretary for Culture Lucia Borgonzoni during the 44th Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee underway until July 31 in Fuzhou, China: "The Porticoes of Bologna are a World Heritage Site. With today’s recognition, Italy gets the third site in this Unesco session.“ Thus the undersecretary confirmed the inscription of the Porticoes of Bologna in the World Heritage Sites. Also on his Facebook profile, posting an image of the famous long porticoes, he wrote: ”Italy on the roof of the world. With Bologna and its porticos recognized as a World Heritage Site, there are 58 Italian sites."
Bologna’s porticos had submitted their candidacy for UNESCO World Heritage status in January 2020, and last May the recognition had been postponed, although their potential as an exceptional testimony of expressive values of urban identity, of private space for public use, had been recognized.
Now finally the good news is here.
