Banksy (Bristol, 1974), the famous British street artist whose identity still remains unknown, on his official website added the exhibition at Milan’s MUDEC (scheduled from November 21 to April 14) among the “fake” exhibitions, that is, those that have been organized without the artist’s consent. The Milan exhibition is in the company of several other exhibitions, set up in various cities around the world (Miami, Brussels, Amsterdam, Moscow, Toronto, Melbourne, Berlin, Antwerp, Istanbul, Tel Aviv, Auckland) but without obtaining the artist’s approval.
“The public,” states a note on the official website, “should be aware that there has been a recent spate of Banksy exhibitions, none of which are consensual. They have all been organized without the artist’s knowledge or involvement. So please approach these exhibitions accordingly.”
However, MUDEC is aware of this choice on the part of the artist. As stated in the presentation of the exhibition, “it will be an exhibition unauthorized by the artist, like all those dedicated to him before, as Banksy continues to defend his anonymity and independence from the system.” In spite of this, the exhibition, the organizers assure, has been set up in such a way as to ensure fidelity to Banksy’s principles of fruition: “there are no works of his on display that have been illegally taken from public spaces, but only works from private collectors of certified provenance.”
