Bad weather in recent hours has done damage in Verona, where a portion of the city’s cathedral, one of the most valuable and important buildings of worship in the Veneto region, collapsed. The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon, during the celebration of the evening Mass, shortly before 7 p.m. No worshippers present during the service were injured, nor was any damage to the works of art reported: beams and bricks fell over a boiler room, near thehigh altar.
Firefighters immediately responded to the scene and secured the area and removed the unsafe elements. The works of art and the area open for worship in general did not suffer any damage: anyone entering the cathedral would see nothing, because the portion of the collapsed roof (an area of six square meters) affected only a technical room. Damage assessment is currently underway, which appears to be minor.
