Bad weather in Albissola Marina, a palm of mud on mosaics of great 20th century artists

In Albissola Marina, bad weather has severely affected the mosaic works of the great 20th-century artists on the Artists' Promenade: the situation in the city is still critical.

Bad weather scourged the city of Albissola Marina, hitting in particular the beach, the coastal promenade and the Lungomare degli Artisti, one of the symbols of Albissola: it is a long avenue that runs along the sea and is decorated with mosaics and works of art by great artists of the 20th century (such as Lucio Fontana, Aligi Sassu, Leoncillo, Sergio Dangelo, Ansgar Elde, Ignazio Moncada and many others). Completely invaded by mud is the waterfront underpass, whose walls are decorated with ceramic panels by Ansgar Elde and Carlos Carlè, and a palmful of mud has covered the mosaic-decorated promenade: the situation in which Albissola finds itself is therefore particularly delicate, although at the moment it is difficult to assess the actual amount of damage, since work is still in progress to clear the debris poured onto the beach and waterfront by the violent storm surge. In addition, due to the delicacy of the mosaics on the waterfront, cleaning by mechanical means is not possible: it is necessary to remove everything by hand, and for this reason, teams of volunteers have immediately stepped in to restore the situation to normal as soon as possible.

In the city, however, it is still orange alert (at least until 4 p.m. today), as the bad weather is not over, and the waterfront remains closed until the end of the emergency situation. “The situation is there for all to see,” Mayor Gianluca Nasuti told Il Secolo XIX. “It was quite a disaster. The underpass is flooded, eight hundred meters of road are completely silted up, and the same goes for the Lungomare degli Artisti, not to mention the incalculable damage that the beach facilities have had. We need to remove a palmful of debris and sand, then we will count the damage. We don’t have too much time to feel sorry for ourselves, we’ve been mobilized by the alerts for three days: we have to hurry, and I must say that the effort is immense.”
