Attic crater fragment discovered in Paestum by Friuli volunteers

During cleaning operations at the Paestum Archaeological Park, a fragment of an Attic crater was discovered by the Friuli Society of Archaeology.

For seventeen years, history buffs from the Friuli Society of Archaeology have been helping with cleanup efforts at the Paestum Archaeological Park.

As they do every year, they were tending to the area in front of the Basilica temple, the oldest of the three Doric monuments, when they discovered a fragment of an Attic black-figure crater dating from the 6th century BC.

Depicted is part of a chariot with horses and charioteer and probably a figure with a spear.

The head of the Friulian Society said, "We have been coming here for many years because we try to make people understand that history is not something reserved for a few, but a heritage of all; that is why it is only right that we lend a hand to the state in the protection and enhancement of historical and artistic heritage. And we have the privilege of being able to work in one of the most important archaeological sites in the whole world, namely in Paestum."

Paestum Archaeological Park director Gabriel Zuchtriegel, after thanking his Friulian friends, said that by cross-referencing the mapping of materials collected on the surface with other data, it is possible to develop research strategies to study the main sanctuary of the city of Paestum.
