At auction at Sotheby's one of the last Van Goghs still in private hands

One of the few Van Goghs still belonging to private individuals will be sold at auction at Sotheby's in late March.

Going up for auction in late March at Sotheby’s is one of the last Vincent van Gogh paintings still belonging to private individuals: the work will in fact be sold on March 25 in an online auction conducted by Sotheby’s teams in Paris.

It is a painting dated 1887, made between late February and mid-April of that year, thus completed during the artist’s brief stay in Paris. It depicts a street scene in Montmartre: in the foreground a couple is walking and two children are playing, while a pepper mill can be seen behind. The work is estimated at 5 to 8 million euros.

Listed in catalogs, it had never appeared on the market since its acquisition: it was bought by a French family about a century ago.

According to the director of the Départment Art Impressioniste et Moderne at Sotheby’s in Paris, Aurélie Vandevoorde, paintings from the Montmartre series are rare and it is very likely that the work will attract great interest from major collectors or institutions. Witness the Montmartre of the late 19th century.
