Atauction at Christie’s is René Magritte’s L’arc de Triomphe, estimated at between $6.5 million and $9.5 million. The auction will be held on July 10 at the One: A Global Sale of the 20th Century event, but it will be streamed and will proceed in relay split between Hong Kong, Paris, London, and New York. It will in fact be one big auction. The sale will be possible during the London session, before the final one in New York.
The work depicts a tree against a background of leaves and was created by the famous artist in 1962. Purchased by Harry Torczyner, the latter made Magritte’s art known in America.
In 1992 it was purchased by Christie’s for $1.1 million before being acquired in 2000 by the current seller.
The painting was first exhibited in Charleroi, later in Los Angeles and Chicago.
