Research activities to preserve and learn about the submerged archaeological heritage of Reggio Calabria continue: from August 5 to 9, in fact, along the stretch of the Via Marina, research activities were carried out at a depth of 40 to 50 meters and documentation of a deposit of ancient amphorae. The latter was reported in 2017 to the Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio (Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape Superintendence) for the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria and the province of Vibo Valentia; a few months after the report, the same Superintendence requested the collaboration of the Superintendence of the Sea of the Region of Sicily for an initial assessment. A rich variety of finds were discovered, dating from the period between the 4th century B.C. and the 5th/6th century A.D.), referable to potential amphoric cargoes from multiple transport ships. Therefore, it was decided to schedule a more punctual patrol activity with the scientific direction of the underwater archaeologist officer and the collaboration of the Nucleo dei Carabinieri Subacquei di Messina aimed at defining the limits of the deposit, its documentation and the most appropriate protection provisions.
During the new survey, it was found that as a result of sea currents, the profile of the deposit had changed from what was documented in 2017. Intact, partially intact or fragmented amphorae , previously not visible, emerged; the presence of modern material was also found, but most importantly, wooden fragments, portions of planking, pertaining to at least one wreck were identified.
New inspections are planned at the points that will be reported. In addition, thanks to the MUSAS project - Museums of Underwater Archaeology, proposed and implemented by theISCR - Superior Institute for Conservation and Restoration of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities, surveys are already planned in the marine protected area of Le Castella in Crotone and in the underwater archaeological area ofancient Kaulon.
