An Italian woman at the helm of one of the world’s most important art fairs: Emanuela Tarizzo, born in 1988, has in fact been appointed director of Frieze Masters, the London-based fair that has been offering ancient art and modern art to an international audience every year since 2012. Tarizzo will assume the post in April and will lead the next edition of Frieze Masters, scheduled for Oct. 15-19, 2025, in Regent’s Park, along with Frieze London.
Tarizzo succeeds Nathan Clements-Gillespie, who is leaving after leading the fair for four years. Tarizzo previously worked as an independent consultant and director at Tomasso British Gallery, a business with offices in London and Leeds that focuses on Old Masters, European sculpture and ancient art. The gallery has exhibited numerous times at Frieze Masters. In her position at Frieze Masters, Tarizzo will also have to “deepen relationships with leading museums and collectors whose insight and ambition shape the industry,” Kristell Chadé, Frieze’s executive director of exhibitions, said in a note.
“I am honored to join Frieze Masters at such a crucial time,” said Tarizzo. “Since its inception, the fair has stood out for its innovative narrative, inviting new perspectives on historical art and dialogue with contemporary audiences. Rooted in London, a city with a truly international perspective and a longstanding reputation as a center of expertise, Frieze Masters continues to be a dynamic meeting place for collectors, curators and galleries. I look forward to building on that founding vision as we shape the distinctive identity of the fair.”
“Frieze,” the fair stressed in a note, “is pleased to announce the appointment of Emanuela Tarizzo as the new director of Frieze Masters. With her solid experience in the art market and deep knowledge of historical art across all periods and geographies, Tarizzo will lead Frieze Masters into its next chapter.”
Emanuela Tarizzo graduated from the Courtauld Institute of Art, and from 2012 to 2021 she worked at Christie’s auction house. She later became an independent consultant and then began working for Tomasso Gallery. Since 2020, Tarizzo has also headed the London Art Week Community Interest Company, a London-based arts promotion body, in charge of coordinating the cultural program.
