It is called Arte Memoria e Spazio Urbano (Memory Art and Urban Space ), the major international sculpture competition promoted by the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca in collaboration with the Fondazione Centro Studi sull’Arte Licia and Carlo Ludovico Ragghianti. This is the first in a series of competitions, which, over the years, “will serve to enhance the beauty of urban landscapes and contexts of our cities,” according to a note. The theme of this year’s call for entries is “The Historical Emigration of Lucca,” chosen because this year marks the 50th anniversary of the Lucchesi nel Mondo Association.
“A social and cultural process,” reads the introduction to the call for entries, “always evolving, which has continued over the centuries with different forms and motivations, but which presents itself as a unique case for constancy and continuity. Never did the feeling of attachment to the land of origin fail, evidenced also by concrete forms of support that emigrants always showed toward the community they had left behind. Emigrants who knew how to bring from their homeland culture and traditions, while still demonstrating a willingness to integrate into the new realities, such that many of them were able to put down new roots without denying their origins.” And it is to recall this phenomenon that has characterized the history of the Lucchesi that a competition has been devised that can produce a work aimed at celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Lucchesi nel Mondo Association. Artists are therefore called upon to submit site-specific projects for the garden of the Walls of Lucca near Porta San Pietro that are able to relate to the surrounding urban context. To the artists’ creativity, the call imposes no theoretical or technical limits: only that the work is required to be compatible with the urban context and with the economic availability of the prize.
The winner will be guaranteed a sum of fifteen thousand euros, while the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca will provide the sum of forty thousand euros gross for the realization of the work. The prize will be settled upon delivery of the completed work, while the deadline for proposals is 2 p.m. on May 10, 2018.
