Alfonsina Russo, current director of the Colosseum Archaeological Park since 2017, has begun her tenure as interim director of the Pompeii Archaeological Park, guiding its activities until the appointment of the next director general.

On the morning of Jan. 15, she was welcomed by the director general of the Great Pompeii Project, General Mauro Cipolletta, and the coordinator of the legality and security group of the Great Pompeii Project (Prefect Vincenza Filippi) and met with the heads of the Park’s offices and staff, accompanied by Mibac Chief of Staff Tiziana Coccoluto, Secretary General Giovanni Panebianco and outgoing Director General Massimo Osanna.
Alfonsina Russo is an archaeologist, specializing in classical archaeology, who became MiBACT director in 2009. She has previously worked in Magna Graecia, Molise and Lazio (where she served as Superintendent for Archaeology for Rome, Viterbo and Southern Etruria) and has managed major museums in Italy and curated exhibitions in Italy and abroad. She also has several scientific publications to her credit as well as at Italian and foreign universities. She was Superintendent of Archaeology forSouthern Et ruria and Superintendent ofArchaeology fine arts and landscape for theRome Metropolitan Area, the province of Viterbo and Southern Etruria.
