On Sunday, March 17, 2019, the underground route was reopened to the public, making Herculaneum’s Ancient Theater accessible again after 20 years. The site had already been visited on an experimental basis last summer, and now it will be possible to walk through this magnificent place of culture.
On the occasion of the first Sunday of opening, numerous visitors decided to go to admire the monumental site, registering a sell-out in the three rounds of visits provided by the Herculaneum Archaeological Park.
“As was easy to expect, we had a sell-out for the three shifts we put in place to start this new experience. The morning was also a success thanks to the City of Herculaneum, the volunteers of the Pro Loco and all the staff who, despite serious shortages in numbers, showed that they share the objectives of opening and expanding the Park’s cultural offerings,” said director Francesco Sirano.
The Ancient Theater was the first monument unearthed by excavations of Vesuvian sites: it was in fact buried by the tragic eruption of Vesuvius in 79 B.C. The site immediately sparked considerable interest during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and was a destination for cultured travelers arriving from different countries.
